What’s in a word: zetetic. The novelist Iain Banks was born on this day February 16, in 1954. He wrote a pamphlet called with the word. Inquiring minds deserve the name zetetic, which means ‘investigating or proceeding by inquiry’, from the Greek zetein, ‘to seek’. Curiously, in the nineteenth century, ‘zetetic astronomers’ were Flat Earthers, after an 1849 pamphlet entitled Zetetic Astronomy: A description of several experiments which prove that the surface of the sea is a perfect plane and that the Earth is not a Globe! More usually, however, zetetic has described those who avoid all proud dogmatism, and was sometimes used interchangeably with ‘sceptic’, as a writer in 1895 referred to ‘Sceptics and Zetetics, indicat[ing] that they were always in search of truth without flattering themselves that they had found it’. The novelist Iain Banks was born on this day in 1954; in his 1996 science-fiction novel Excession, we read of a splendid offshoot of the enlightened Culture civilization that glories in the name of the Zetetic Elench. The root of ‘Elench’ is the Greek elenchos, ‘cross-examination’, often used of Socrates’s questioning method. So, happily, the Zetetic Elench were questioning inquirers.
