The right to have no opinion …
I was struck by a thought of Marcus Aurelius in his “Meditations” (6.52) when he says that “men have the right not to have any opinion on “things” on which they do not know or do not intend to comment” and for this reason they must not make a problem. He argues that the “things” that happen in our lives don’t always have the strength to shape our judgment.
Think of the discussions that take place in all forums, by all kinds of people and authorities. Are you sure that everyone knows what they are saying, that they have an opinion, a precise and above all correct idea of what they think, say and do? We are all involved, of course. Starting from the top up to me writing this post trying to understand what the stoics of all time thought.
The question we must ask ourselves is very simple: can we have an opinion on things we ignore…
