Mario Vargas Llosa e Gabriel Garcia Marquez, entrambi premi Nobel per la letteratura, si incontrarono, oggi, 12 febbraio 1976.
Erano stati migliori amici quando entrambi vivevano a Barcellona durante il “Boom” della narrativa latinoamericana, Mario Vargas Llosa e Gabriel García Márquez avevano già iniziato ad allontanarsi, sia a causa della politica che delle diverse personalità, quando si incontrarono a Città del Messico alla premiere di Survivors of the Andes, film su un incidente aereo uruguaiano (lo stesso raccontato in Alive) di cui Vargas Llosa aveva scritto la sceneggiatura. “Fratello!” gridò García Márquez e alzò le braccia per abbracciarlo, ma Vargas Llosa diede un pugno in faccia al suo vecchio amico e lo fece cadere a terra, gridando: “Questo è per quello che hai detto” — o “fatto”, secondo altri testimoni — “per Patricia”, la moglie di Mario. Furono le ultime parole che i due scrittori — entrambi i premi Nobel ora — si scambiarono.

The best of friends when they both lived in Barcelona during the “Boom” in Latin American fiction, Mario Vargas Llosa and Gabriel García Márquez had already begun to drift apart, thanks to both politics and personality, when they met in Mexico City at the premiere of Survivors of the Andes, a film of a Uruguayan plane crash (the same one recounted in Alive) for which Vargas Llosa had written the screenplay. “Brother!” cried García Márquez and raised his arms for an embrace, but Vargas Llosa punched his old friend in the face and knocked him to the ground, shouting, “That’s for what you said” — or “did,” according to other witnesses — “to Patricia,” Mario’s wife. They were the last words either writer — both Nobel laureates now — has spoken to the other.
